When Nothing Off the Shelf Will Fit: A Custom 304 Stainless Transition Chute

Introduction

Some jobs arrive with a part number. This one arrived with a problem.

A processing facility needed to move product between two pieces of equipment that simply did not line up — not in height, not in orientation, and not in connection type. The inlet and the outlet sat on different planes, offset in both directions, with a twist between them. There is no catalog page for that. There is no “close enough” either, because a chute that doesn’t seat correctly leaks, binds, or hangs up product.

So they called us, and Ted took the job.

The Challenge

The geometry was the hard part. The chute had to twist along its length and offset both ways to get from one connection point to the other — a compound transition, not a simple taper. On top of that, the flanges on each end were completely different from one another. Different bolt patterns, different geometry, one end mating to an entirely different style of connection than the other.

Every panel had to be developed flat, formed, and welded so that two dissimilar, non-parallel, non-concentric openings ended up exactly where the equipment expected them. Get the layout wrong by a fraction and the error compounds down the whole length of the piece.

Material was 304 stainless steel. The chute handles food-grade processing material, so the interior needed smooth, continuous welds and clean transitions — nothing to trap product, nothing to harbor bacteria, nothing that fights a washdown.

The Build

Ted’s team had a day and a half to draw it up and a week and a half to build it. That is a tight window for a piece with this much compound geometry. Layout came first, because on a twisting, offsetting transition the layout is the job the welding is just following through on it. From there it was forming, fitting, welding, and finishing, with the flange work on both ends held to the tolerances the mating equipment demanded.

Ted enjoyed it. Not many shops take on this kind of geometry, and fewer still will commit to it on that schedule. It’s the sort of piece that separates a fabricator from a supplier.

The Fit

We don’t ship compound transitions and hope. Before final delivery, the chute was dry-fit to confirm it landed exactly where it needed to. The first fit-up called for a few alterations — expected on a piece with this much going on — and after those adjustments it fit perfectly. We handled the installation ourselves, and the customer got a chute that dropped into place and went to work.
