This antique tractor restoration project was worked on by Ted Prettyleaf and involved creating custom metal parts for a customer with an extraordinary knowledge of old tractors. The customer is totally blind and has restored hundreds of antique tractors over the years. When a part is no longer available or needs to be custom made, he creates a sample out of plastic or wood. From there, Ted and the team visit his shop, talk through the details, and fabricate the final part out of metal.
“The guy was totally blind and he came in and carved the piece he needed out of wood and we made it for him.” – Ted
Pictured here is the tractor that was worked on during the restoration process. You can see the large exposed engine, custom metal piping, front grille assembly, red frame, and restored mechanical components coming together inside the shop. The photo gives a good look at the kind of hands-on fabrication and fitting work that goes into bringing old equipment back to life.
On a project like this, every part has to fit the machine properly, function safely, and still look right with the tractor’s original character.
Welding is often a major part of the process for repairing or building brackets, frames, mounts, and structural components.
Grinding tools are used to shape, smooth, and prepare fabricated metal parts.
Metal brakes help bend and form custom sheet metal components.
Shears, saws, and torches are used to cut metal accurately for fabrication work.
Machining tools assist in producing precision-fit replacement components.
Tubing benders help create custom piping and exhaust components for restoration projects.
This kind of work is not limited to antique tractors. The same fabrication skills can be used for farm equipment, trailers, machinery guards, handrails, custom brackets, industrial repairs, equipment modifications, replacement panels, and one-of-a-kind metal parts that cannot simply be ordered.
In many cases, the job starts with an idea, a broken part, or a handmade pattern, and ends with a finished metal component that is strong enough to go back to work.
